Annette Funicello's dancer was discovered on the streets of Fullerton California by Walt Disney at the age of 13 years old. Funicello was not a candidate in the Mickey Mouse Club and joined in the latter half of the season of the series, much to the annoyance of their Mickey Mouse Club peers. Disney's instincts were correct Funicello became the most sought-after Mickey Mouse Club performer. The story she wrote for her own show Adventures in Dairyland also featured her. Funicello needed to record records in order to realize her superstar capacity. Annette was not very enthusiastic about singing and Disney hired Tutti Camerata to be her manager to guide her as an artist. Funicello eventually became accustomed to recording and enjoyed the time she spent in the studio with Camerata, one of the very few arrangers of their 40s who understood the fundamentals of early rock. Annette Sings Anka is the album that marked the beginning of her progress. It could be the first LP featuring a rock songwriter. Funicello appeared alongside Frankie Avalon in Beach Party. The film was the first in a sequence of movies about beach parties which became immensely popular. The scripts for all of these films were thoroughly reviewed and endorsed by Walt Disney so as to protect Annette's image.
