O'Neil auditioned for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. She was able to advance into the top 100 courtesy of the enthusiasm shown by judges for the performance. O'Neil was praised by the judges. But she lost badly in both the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. Judges were amazed by her performance and recommended viewers to select contestants who sang well and had a strong voice, like Melissa. O'Neil has been always delivering top performance since then, always finished in the third place. The two other performances she gave on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil was able to advance to the final two in the finals of the competition, Werner predicted that the morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie as she became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil received a phone call right away from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
